Hi! I have a New 3DS XL running Luma3DS and Godmode9 (I think the latest versions of each?).

This all started when I used Godmode9 to make a .cia of a cartridge copy of Miitopia. I then copied and pasted everything on my card to a brand new, larger MicroSD (32gb, formatted in FAT32. Make is Agfaphoto if it matters), since my measly 4gb card didn't have enough space to install Miitopia.

Well, that's all fine and dandy, but when I tried installing Miitopia from FBI, it threw an error. Specifically "Bus error- TWL partition invalid".

That really scares me, since isn't the TWL basically just the SysNAND? I have a backup of my SysNAND, but I'm not too sure how to recover it if I somehow bricked my console. I mean, the system still works, but I'm a very anxious person.

Anyways, so, being the idiot I am, I decided to retry the installation. This time, it threw a different error: "Bus: Stop bit error".

So, I give up and try exiting FBI. It says something along the lines of not being able to show or access the files? My memory is bad. So then Rosalina throws an error (At least, I believe it's Rosalina since the error report's just on the bottom screen, like the Rosalina menu) and it tells me to press any button to reboot. So, I do.

System reboots and when I reach the Home menu, my custom theme reverts back to one of the stock themes included with the system (Basic white), and the 3DS tells me it can't detect the MicroSD. I turn the 3DS off and on again and nothing much has changed other than my splash screen having a vertical strip of random pixels across the top screen.

This is very worrying, and I've decided not to turn my 3DS on again until I know what's going on. Seeing as my cfw is just on my SD card (I didn't allow Godmode9 to alter my SysNAND as a precaution), I think it's just my new card acting up? Anyway, I just need to know if I royally screwed up my system, and if so, how to fix all this. Thanks in advance, and sorry if this is the wrong place to post this.

The obvious thing to do is to try plugging in your old card and see if that works correctly. But first, of course, you should back it up to your PC first if you haven't already.

Did you test your new SD card with h2testw?

I should add that it's easy to conserve space if you use Boop to do a network install of a game (meaning you don't have to have the .cia on your SD card when you install it). And of course you don't necessarily need to keep your NAND backup on your SD card if you have somewhere else (preferably multiple other places) to store it.

Just did that, and things worked flawlessly on the 4gb card. I suppose it probably is a problem with the new card.. Time to test it with h2testw.

Yeahh, it's looking like the new card might just be bad. How utterly disappointing that a brand new card ended up not working.

Still curious as to what the FBI errors meant.

Where did you purchase that SD card? If it was eBay or 3rd party seller on Amazon, they're often fake cards.

Check my signature for SD card deals. And remember, check it in H2testw before using.

Garbage in, garbage out, I reckon. If a failing SD card starts to produce random data that FBI would not normally expect, it seems reasonable that it might start producing error messages that don't make any sense either. Or maybe there's a more logical explanation.
