Facebook Passes 1 Billion Users

Well I never had the need to talk to a bunch of people about anything that important so I'm fine, I'm also really private so most of my relatives don't know what I'm up to recently and it's usually my friends that come to me screaming about stuff that has happened to them. Apart from my daily life I spend time on forums and adding more music and anime to my phone.

If you're an anti-social person, that's fine. But don't assume the rest of us are sheep just because we like to pro-actively talk with our friends frequently using a standard online protocol. Just think about why MSN and other IM clients used to be popular.

You know I wouldn't use the term anti-social as I do enjoy my privacy but I for one don't have a facebook cause of certain people who stalk me or better yet go up to my place of business and try and get information about me talking about their my cousin.... really? lol they are also not like the physcho girl but actually old friends who don't like the fact I'm leaving them behind to better myself. So there are many reasons why people are private & have no use for such social networks albeit I do have an twitter account completly locked down so only friends can see not friends of friends.

It really has to do with following the herd for most people. It's a psychological type of thing I read in class.

Yea I just find it strange because they say they think for themselves and then just blindly follow the herd later, I guess 1 billion people have nothing better to do with their lives.

You call people who use Facebook "sheep" and complain about how they're just blindly "following the herd", and you think you're entitled to a good retort?

It feels very "sheep-like" to jump on the "Facebook is nothing but sheep" bandwagon.

There's nothing wrong with it, it's a great technology and it has really changed the way we think about the world. Gahars and I, being recent college students and recent high school graduates, can attest to Facebook's connectivity. I mean I may not want to talk to everyone I met in high school, but I add them on Facebook to keep tabs on them. It's interesting to see people you know from high school grow up, get married, have kids, whatever.

Even for an older man like my dad, he's been able to find friends from his high school (which he graduated from about 30 years ago) and keep in contact or at least keep tabs on them.

There's no "herd" mentality. I didn't join Facebook because it was cool and I'd get spitballs lobbed at me from across the cafeteria if I didn't. I made an account and have used it for several years because I wanted to.

You're an incredibly pompous douchebag if you're going to mark everyone who uses Facebook as part of a "herd mentality" when almost everyone I know who has a Facebook uses it for a reason. Not because it's the "in" thing, but for everything from keeping in contact with friends, using it for easy access to accounts (clicking "Log In with Facebook" is easier than a username and password), organizing discussions for projects, whatever.

EDIT: Also saying that "text messaging" is a substitute is just plainly wrong. First off, how is joining Facebook a "herd mentality" but text messaging isn't? Texting became huge in the past decade or two, and there's a rather large "herd mentality" that goes with it. I use my phone for texting more than actually calling people. I "joined the herd" on this one because it literally became the only way to communicate. Friends of mine (going to throw Gahars under the bus again for this one) can attest to how much of a pain in the ass it was to contact me before I got a phone that could text effectively. I mean they could just call me at my house but people don't do that any more.

Also there's so much that Facebook does that texting cannot. Texting is only equivalent to a crude instant messaging which Facebook has. Sharing images with a large audience, posting status updates (you would never text a friend "Man today was hard" usually but you'll post something like that every day on Facebook), playing games, a lot of things.

It was interesting to read how many of these 1 billion active accounts were mobile based accounts . From the point of view of mass marketing your website , pushing it to the phone and mobile arena was genius .

I have used FB for all the reasons people do , and have after roughly a year of using it , closed the account , i felt at times compelled to check FB while at the pc/phone/internet connected device , just to see what aunt sally's 2nd cousin removed had for breakfast , and to offer my thoughts on her food choice , for all to see . Utter shite . Was good to reminise for a while with old friends , but i guess thats just what they are . Old friends i no longer see for 1 reason or another.
