Hello. I'm actually leaving this post for posterity , since no info I found on the matter was even close to my issue.

On a differnt post, I stated my Ezflash Jr. was failing to boot. The farthest it got was the OS-INIT line when booting, which meant I couldn't even run a firmware update. The systems - A GB Pocket, and a GB Boy Colour (A GB Color clone backlit system) - just kept rebooting.

I tried formatting my sd card, using different sd cards, formatting with different tools, etc. Today, on a last ditch effort before contacting the vendor for a replacement, I decided to try a very old fat model GBA I have laying around (it's barely functional). I put the batteries from the cone system on it.

Perhaps this is the moment to mention all three of these systems run on batteries and are not modded. To my surprise, the thing *actually* booted correctly on the GBA. I even could perform the firmware update! So what gives? Well... another detail I took notice of, is that the batteries were "low".

See, I was using batteries that came bundled with a charger, practicay new, and I did give the GB Boy clone a nice use - I've played some Oracle of Ages on that thing. And for the pocket, I recenty bought it, second hand, and the batteries that were running in it are the same that came with it. But there's no reason a GBA would consume less than a gameboy let alone a pocket, right? Except the GB Boy *is* backlit and I recall reading posts of come flashcarts being power hungry on it.

So, in order to test if it was indeed a power problem, I did that thing any 90's kid has done. The Pocket uses smaller batteries. Like our TV's remote. So I put them in the pocket, put in the cart, turned on the system and...

...it works!

So I'm guessing the reason it kept rebooting, is that during the INIT process, the cart was drawing more power than usual, making the system believe there isn't enough battery for a moment (or, perhaps, there was indeed not enough battery to begin with), but the switch continues to be ON, so the system proceeds to turn on normally, rinse and repeat.

...I feel smart.

Hi there!
I recently bought a backlit Gameboy (DMG). Only mod is that backlight. No AGS-101, four buttons, shoulder button etc. I wanted to keep it as original looking as possible. And now I am in search for a flash card. EZ Flash Jr is one of my options and I was wondering if it would play on a backlit DMG or not. Do you have any info on this?
Thank you in advance!

P.s. I am BRAND new here so this is my first post. Forgive me if I haven't seen a similar post...

learned the hard way that these don't work on GB Boy Colour, after doing the same with the Jack DIY Flashcart smh
Thank you for the reply!
So, if I go with the traditional way of buying some original cartridges off ebay, would they work? Or is this incompatibility present even on original cartridges other than Everdrive?
Thank you once again!

I have a GB Boy Colour and all the real GB carts I've tried have worked. I can't say I recommend the GB Boy Colour for actually playing games:

  • it isn't all that cheap
  • the d-pad is acceptable quality, I guess
  • the sound sucks
  • the battery life sucks (reboots without warning when low and it is a power pig)
  • the screen sucks (no brightness control and the image is distorted).
  • probably doesn't work well with flashcarts; crazy power consumption makes this concern kind of academic
  • retrogame (old models) is more versatile rubbish for around the same price.
