i would like to know if it's possible to transfer/extract savegame data from an original DS cartrigde to a flashcard.
if yes, what is needed to do so?

The same methods that dump roms can dump saves although there are some more dedicated programs. It was considerably easier during the GBA slot/slot 2 era but with a 3 in 1 (either for actual NOR writing or to abuse the SRAM) or using wifi and a PC it is easy enough.

Rudolph's dumping tools will also work (wood dumper I believe lacks save support)

Oh and a word that probably does not apply here- pokemon heart gold and soul silver abstract their saves to help that pokewalker thing to function (it uses the same bus) so you can either mod the official cart http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=215641 or you will need a so called "NDS Backup Adapter Plus". I am not sure if it has been solved since though- theoretically it is a simple software fix.
