Hey GBATempers,
I've been using a 1 TB WD passport harddrive for the past few years without a Y cable. It plugs in to a single USB port and the Wii U has seemed to have no issues with that, oddly.
After I hacked it, though, I've been having a problem with WUP INSTALLER GX2. When downloading large games, the file will often stop downloading 20-30% of the way through after my harddrive makes a click sound. I've used Mocha, CBHC, Haxchi, and all had the same problem.
In addition to it struggling to download files, the games have been unable to display cutscenes properly. During cutscenes, it will play for a second before it lags out severely, like watching videos on a horribly laggy internet connection. The odd thing is that this never happened with games downloaded to my USB until I hacked the Wii U. I downloaded a GameCube game today and it crashed during a cutscene.
If I unplug the USB drive after it clicks and the download ceases, the Wii U crashes. When I use the homebrew version of WUP INSTALLER, I get the error notification that there is a problem with the USB storage device and to contact the device manufacturer.

My question is: Should I expect the Y cable to solve all of these issues? Has anyone else experienced these? Thanks! :)

If it's clicking, then yes. It's a sure sign that the drive does not have enough power. I had similar issues and they were solved with a Y-cable though it was some time ago.

I hear it click a single time before the download stops. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
