Hacking Etrian Odyssey IV Save issue

I trying to play Etrian Odyssey and I am unable to save in the game. The save function does work with other games. After saving in the inn, I press home, then close. If I go back in, there will only be the option to start a new game. I've tried saves multiple times. The little sprout animations plays but there are no save successful confirmation (not sure if it's supposed to be there since I've never seen it). Anyone else have this issue/know what to do?

Are you playing this on a cartridge, digitally, or on the Gateway (or related clone cart)?

The gateway 3ds. I found the issue was fixed by going to options and deleting the save. I have no idea why that would be the case.
