Which nand have you mostly used?
Are there things on (the old) emunand you want to keep?

I don't see the point in using Method 1, if you start from the beginning of setting up an emunand (for the new card).
You can keep your nintendo 3ds folder (which is used by sysnand) and don't need to format your sysnand.
Just simply use the EmunandTool9 tool to create a new emunand on the new sd card.
Then you just have to unlink the new emunand from your sysnand.
Use TinyFormat for the unlinking, since it only formats settings and leaves the sd card untouched.
Could you rephrase that? but more simpler.

Do you want to keep something from your old emunand on the old sd card? like installed games etc.
If not, then you can setup a fresh emunand on the new sd card. (like @Garro suggested)

If you create a new emuNAND, this is a copy of your sysNAND.
So every clean up before the creation of the emuNAND is not necessary.

In Method 1:
Format sysNAND and delete "Nintendo 3DS" folder
You don't need to clean up these things.

Edit:
I forgot, that you used Gateway Emunand.
So I'm not sure, how the process of creating a emuNAND is there, but the things above should hold.

I just want menuhax to stay intact and my savefiles.

I don't know, where the Gateway keeps the game saves.
Are they on the root of your sd card with names like 000400000008D300.sav?
Then just make a copy of these files on your PC.

Menuhax is on your sysNAND. Formating sysnand would uninstall it.

Does your Gateway create the emunand, or do you use a tool like EmunandTool9?

Gateway just keeps emunand in the nintendo 3ds folder. A bunch of random letters and numbers.

Just remembered the saves are in the root of the sd card.

For the saves: Just copy them over to your new sd card.
If you copy the "Nintendo 3DS" folder to your new SD card, Menuhax should still work.

If you use the format of system settings, then the sysnand AND the SD card will be formated.
So make a backup of your SD card and copy it back afterwards.

If you use TinyFormat, only the sysnand (or emunand) will be formated.

If you want to do it regardless, then first format sysnand and afterwards delete the folder.
sysnand should create one, if it can't be found.

formating in the system settings will do 3 things: 1. deletes Nintendo 3DS/<ID> folder 2. logs you out of your nnid 3. creates a new encryption key, that result, creates and use another <ID> folder in the Nintendo 3DS folder.
The homebrew tool tiny format only does the last thing, the old data from the old <ID> folder will be not used, they only take space from your sd card

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
