Hi, I'm a noob with a 3.0.2 switch and got a question to ask about emunand and GC reader firmware. So I think I saw that going > 4.0 and not disabling GC reader would permanently upgrade the reader so it won't be usable anymore below 4.0. Would using emunand allow bypassing that so I can play my GC without upgrading GC reader or would it still upgrade the GC reader once I enable it? Also, would it be relatively safe to go online on emunand using legit GC or it's like an immediate ban?

Open source emunand is still relatively new so I'd advise waiting until most kinks are ironed out. With that said, an emunand isn't magical, if you burn fuses on emunand or update the game card reader while on emunand there is no going back. If you use a clean NAND while on emunand, there should be no reason for you to be banned while using legit bought games, it's literally like using an untouched Switch.

I urge you to take my advice and wait for an update though.

EmuNAND/MMC will update GC firmware if you don't use the don't update GC with atmosphere.
I asked this exact question on reswitched. You can either update the GC and play games on your EmuMMC or disable it and use digital only (to be able to use your GC reader on lowe version).

not until emuGC is a thing

4.a. I played with the Idea of emuGC, which would be a compatibility wrapper for the ASIC, also this wouldn't enable XCI. But this Idea so far is hot air.

Yeah you have to choose if you want to use carts in your 3.x sysnand or in your updated emunand, can't have both (currently). And updating to use carts in updated firmware (emunand or otherwise) is irreversible, so be sure of your decision (IDK if it will always be irreversible, but better safe than sorry).

I hate this because now I need to buy SMM2 digitally (which is more expensive, has no resellable value and no collectors value).

Dump your cart and install it as an NSP? (Or just pirate it, but I assume you're opposed to that if you're considering rebuying a game you already own)

Yea, I will definitely get my 1.0.0 virgin switch banned.
And I want to get SSM2, which is a strickly online game. So that's another nono.

Because emummc is safe online unlike SX OS emunand, because bare ams is safe (which is what runs on emummc).
I wouldn't take that as fact.

But if you're confident in that, then just let the gamecard reader firmware update. Who cares if you can't read game cards in 1.0? Most games aren't compatible with 1.0 anyway.

You don't have to. AMS block pretty much all reports, so at least that's a fact.
Anyone who cares about consoles as a collector item cares about that. If you can't read game cards on stock FW, the console loses a great chunk of its value. It's no longer stock (which is where it's value lies).

A console also loses a good chunk of its value if it's used, open box, etc.

Hell, you already have another Switch that you've hacked. Just use that? Why do you have to play the game on your 1.0?

Because that one is 100% not flagged.
Considering that Switches don't come sealed, nobody can tell open one from unopen one unless it has cosmetic problems ;)
