I modded my Vita a few months ago, and except for Adrenaline haven't installed any emus yet. (standalone or frontend) From what I've read DaedalusX64 is the way for n64, but for everything else the Vita can handle there's less agreement. I know some people prefer standalone emus on the Vita, but most recommend setting up Retroarch even if it is a hairball to tweak. But I'm also running into some rabid advocacy for Emu4Vita++ as a better frontend, easier to setup and better performance than Retroarch.

Opinions?

Emu4Vita++ uses the same emulation cores as Retroarch, it just comes with a better default configuration for the VITA and with a smaller and less complex UI.

Because they use the same emulation cores, if a specific emulation core have the same configuration on both, you will get very similar performance.

Overall, Emu4Vita++ is easier to get going because of the better default configurations; while Retroarch you have to go to the hoops to configure each core you want to use, but after configured properly, the performance is about the same.

Emu4vita++ has a DOSBOX Pure core with good performance, unlike RetroArch.

The MAME 2003 Xtreme core is the best for Irem and Data East arcade games.

FBA Lite runs CPS3 and PGM at full speed.

Medanafen SuperFaust core runs SNES games with MSU audio.

Chimera SNES runs some games with special chips well.

Overall, it's much faster to run games, and it's also useful for filtering the catalog because it allows you to delete ROMs directly.

Any recommended settings for SNES, GBA and Mega drive? I don't usually use emulators but like what are some good or recommended settings like shaders and all that and the resolution stuff?

For the vita, Megadrive is easy to emulate on default vita core clock speeds.
Then you have the GBA cores , in both frontends what you do is pick a core, run a game and see if it performs near 60fps, if it doesn't, pick the other one available. Gba cores will run most of the gba catalog, with some minor tweaks here and there (for me gba Mario golf didn't run well on any emu or config i tried even with high frameskip values, and also i believe golden sun can't run 100%), and SNES is just some special fx chip games, but they do run. E.G. Final Fantasy VI needs oc to the vita core to 500hz in order to run the legendary intro FFVI properly without any sound hiccups, then you could just set it to 444hz. GBA games will run on even lower vita core hz like default or even lower i believe, simple games like Pac-man collection.

For the resolution you just don't config a thing, and shaders pick the ones called zfast which means less load on the vita core.

Go with emu4vita++ it is very good once you get how it goes. Cheers
