When do you get this error? Is it when you extract or pack an ARC or is it when you replace a TPL?

That error must be coming from U8tool.exe. I'll see what it is if I have time

I just downloaded your tool and took a look at it and I like the looks of it. Was a little disappointed that only the address.ash tpl support was implemented but it's not finished so no big deal. If you need some help with the specifics of the different TPL files and formats to make tab sheets come and join us on IRC in #softmii on EFNET. We've pretty much got a handle on all the graphics of the system menu and which need to be alpha/transparent/solid etc....
