just thought i throw this out there, but doesnt anyone remember the post from when lgc team first did the dumps?
there were photos of a custom hardware device that they used to make those dumps,

I can verify that the picture is accurate. I opened up my NDS Backup Adapter Plus and it's the same. Sadly, I can't take a picture of mine as I don't have a camera.

i think they were posted on this site not too long ago in the 3ds hacking and homebrew section or at least there was a link to them there, but i forgot which thread exactly ,but if you check through this section and go back a moth a few months and look for the 3ds roms dumped threads you will find them

but im not sure what you will be able to see, im not ure how clear they were, but i do remember it was a rather large looking apparatus
but as for seeing which pins are used im not sure if you would be able to see that

Yes, a custom FPGA board and custom CPLD were used by LGC to dump their roms. A few members here have been successful with partial non-3DS dumps and rom patching which explains a great deal of info when dumping. I don't think we will get anywhere close to dumping the 3DS cartridge until we learn a little bit more about the 3DS cartridge and the 3DS hardware.

Nintendo also patched a few important exploits with their recent firmware updates.

Check out DarkFader for a good start on documentation.
