As in: You take a piece of paper, i mean thick paper and put it between your DSTT cart and your DS in the slot-1 opening. That's what he means.

Where the DSTT logo is or on its back?

He didn't say, but i assume where the logo is. See, the problem manifests itself because of poor contact between the DSTT and the contact pins inside the DS. And since the contact pins of a DS cart are located on the opposite side of the logo, you need to apply pressure on the logo side to bring the pins of both the cart and the DS together.

You might also try experimenting with putting more of the paper farther back into the slot. In theory, If the paper is thickest opposite the contacts, it should help them make better contact.

I've also been having the same problem. I haven't tried these solutions, but I thought I would point out mine is also from DealExtreme just like everyone else's. Our problem seems to be different as ours will actually freeze when the DS is booting, so far for others I've just read about freezes when loading a ROM after the menu has loaded.

Might be worth avoiding DealExtreme over for this one... I got my original R4 from them years ago and it was fine, but these DSTTs might be faulty.

DSTT's are notorious for contact problems. You should try to eliminate other possible problems before assuming it's a contact problem, but once you've confirmed it's the contacts, your best bet is to return it for a new one. DealExtreme is very good about exchanging faulty flash carts (they even pay return shipping).
