Not going to work. This is intentional behaviour built into the 3DS and built into the 3DS ARM9 bootrom.
If it were possible to do something similar in the DSi it would likely have been discovered when the DSi bios/bootroms were dumped.

wait, when were the dsi Bootroms dumped?

Now that you mention it I'm not sure they were.
I was certain that they were, but now that I look closer I can't find any record that the upper 0x8000 bytes (the "bootrom" section of the bios) of the ARM7 bios isn't available anywhere.

I wonder if we could dump these from a 3DS, then... I also heard rumours that the CTR ARM11 BIOS contains DSi-related goodies.

If I recall correctly someone did manage to dump the bootrom but they did not share it for copyright reasons.

I confirmed that the backdoor exists on DSi too via my DS-Xtreme and paying attention to the timing of it's LEDs in relation to when screen init occurs. Normally DS-X LEDs power on after the screen turns on. But the key combo turns it on immediately and they even flash white.

However knowing this is useless. DSi isn't vulnerable to the sighax thing because the flaw in bootrom's RSA parser isn't present in the DSi. So you'd only be able to use signed bootloader code in the cart you are using the backdoor on. So yeah....

Fun to know this key combo exists on DSi though... :P

That's funny! :D Honestly the whole START+SELECT+X+POWER thing reminds me so much of the PSPs Pandora, nostalgia :P
