Gaming DS multiplayer?

Apologies in advance if I'm in the wrong spot, but this seemed more fitting than the flashcard/cfw section.

What is the current state of NDS rom multiplayer? I imagine that servers are gone and online multiplayer (via Internet) is a no-go, but what about local, DS-to-DS multiplayer? And, if it's possible through a retail cartridge, would it be possible on with Gateway as well? I'm thinking specifically of Pokemon or Mario/Sonic Winter Games.

Local should work, but for online you need to change your DS connection settings to whats needed to connect to the wiimfi servers. I
