so I've had my ds lite for a while and at least one of my hinges is shot but I don't know which one it is so I was just going to buy to off ebay and replace them both but my question is are the hinges side specific.

there is actually only "one" twist-axel hinge mechanism in the ds lite. this is why the case cracking occurs (excessive pressure being applied unevenly). is it the hinge itself which is giving out or has your shell cracked?

actuly my shell did crack but how would that afect the hinge

The crack in the casing allows the hinge to spin on its own (not the twist axle part - but the whole hinge )

Replace the case and all will be back to normal, you do NOT need a hinge, these are so reliable they very rarely fail.
