Dreamcast?

I'm thinking bout buying a Dreamcast from the states (Aussie Ebay prices are way too expensive) But before I do, i need to know a few questions?

How easy is it to play games from other countries?

Is the power supply universal?

What are some essential games?

What about backups?

Anyone who considers themself to be a gamer needs to at least experience a Dreamcast. It was way ahead of its time and has some of the most amazing games on it.

^ there are lot of games missing from that list, though Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 were shit!

Its really easy to pirate, pretty much any game is on the nets and I've yet to have a single problem with any game from any region. No idea about power supply though google should help.

You should totally try Dream cast gaming. Either try the emulator or get the system bit Shenmue is a game that should not be ignored.

The power supply is internal, like with a PS3, so you really just get a power cord with the system, I have no idea how easy it would be to plug it into a foreign power grid, but you're probably going to need some sort of extra equipment to do it. Connecting it to a foreign TV might be an issue as well, just keep that in mind.

You don't have to do anything to a Dreamcast to play backups, they run them as is, no modchips, no custom firmware, nothing, just pop in the disc (or a boot disc if the iso isn't self booting) and go. There is one model of the Dreamcast that supposedly took out the support for the type of disc that allowed the backups to run, but it's incredibly unlikely you're going to come across one, they're very rare.

I just took my Dreamcast out of the closet a couple of months ago, I had forgotten how great it is.

I have had no issues playing games from other countries, and games are very easy to find online and rip to cd-roms.

Games I love are NFL 2K, 2K1 and 2K2, San Francisco Rush 2049, Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2, Soulcalibur, Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio

They aren't. I have one. If the Dreamcast was manufactured before October, 2000… It can play CD-Rs easily… If not… The disk images must be in data/data format… Not Audio/Data.

Propeller Arena - Amazing arcade-style dogfights in fighter planes.Never got an official release (some say due to 9/11 as it is possible to crash your plane into buildings in some levels!) but was ready for release. Some nice guy ponied up the dough for the prototype and dumped it online for all to enjoy, God bless his oily hide!

To play imports you need a import loader like the utopia disc or an action replay/gameshark disk.

Power supply is internal as stated above and specific to the country voltage, if you live in australia (I think you use 220Volts? don't know how many Herts (HZ) you have, maybe 60hz?) you'll need a step down converter, US dreamcasts uses 110V/60Hz, plugging it directly to your outlet will make a great firework/smoke bomb but I suppose you don't want that to happen.

The essential games for me are Jet set radio/shenmue, the two sonic adventures, sky of arcadia, quake III and unreal if you like FPS, MSR for racing, and crazy taxi I/II.

Backups are ridiculously easy to use, burn correctly your backup (low burn speed recommended) put into the dreamcast and enjoy (warning may decrease gd rom drive life span, as burned media are harder to read).
EDIT: I forgot now you can use a modified SD card reader to play backups from SD cards.
