Gaming Download Firefox 6 Now

Chrome unfortunately just can't do what FF can. For someone like myself who is more of a "power user," it's not really an option. The extension API just isn't there yet.

Eh ? Is this really the official version? not a source code built somebody on the net ? Since the firefox website is still showing firefox 5.0.1 instead of well firefox 6

Kind of the same thing I was wondering. Now this release of FF 6 is calling itself final, but shouldn't it come up as an update in the FF updater if it was meant for public consumption?

But then again, I was running FF 5.0 and checked for updates (through help and about) and it didn't even mention 5.0.1, it just said that my 5.0 was "up to date". Now I just went to http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/fx/ and updated to 5.0.1 (as that was what it offered) and it says THAT is now "up to date". It seems their update feature checked directly through FF is borked if it missed 5.0.1. I can probably understand that FF6 isn't coming up as an update yet because it's new, but still, why didn't it inform me about 5.0.1? And why did they stop having the little popup bubble in the corner come up to inform you of updates? Why does it make you manually check for that now?

They upload it to their FTP server a few days before the official release, but it is the stable release.

Well, I installed FF6.....I guess it's a little faster. But they always seem faster when first installed. Wait a week and it will likely seem about the same as FF5. Besides, my ISP is pretty zippy, so a half-second or 3/4-second page load speed matters little to me. All it needs to do is boot the freakin' page and slurp up my downloads, a few kbps difference in either direction is unimportant. I use FF for it's addon's abilities, not load speed or how pretty it looks.

i dont know why it's slow for you guys, firefox boots up instantly for me. and the extensions are a must, because i am also a poweruser. as far as security goes, i'm sure ff is the same or better. there are endless addons that add security

I'm on 7.0a2 with Aurora.
I only use Chrome when I need my browser right that second. Firefox does what I need, and hopefully with 7.0 Final it'll do it much quicker.

after reading this i got Aurora, wow it only takes 3 seconds to start up

i personally prefer firefox, its extensions are much more robust when compared to chrome's. a few other behaviors of chrome stop me from using it as well. HOWEVER, i don't care that other people prefer it.

not that firefox isn't without issue. the RAM thing is an annoyance on my laptop with ONLY 4 GB. this appears to cut that consumption down by about a half, and that's pretty good. chrome however, is not exactly frugal with RAM either, and people tend to forget that.

Anyway, remaining with the "Bleeding Edge" releases that are 8...

When you start forming insulting puns based on the name of the product, it kind of implies that you've taken the subject to a more personal and less logical state.

On a serious note, I need to explain that I am not a "power-user". I use the internet to browse a few favorite sites (GBATemp, reddit, Twitter, etc.) I do not program in any way (yet) and I only have use for very few FF extensions (Adblock, 1password) that can be replicated on Google Chrome.

The faster release schedule is not something that seems good for FF; the numbered updates were normally meant as either total overhauls in bug fixes or GUI. Simply "speeding the browser up" does not give me the incentive of downloading it.

The single greatest weakness of the Mozilla Foundation has always been their incredibly long and arduous development cycle.

In the time between releases 3.0 and 4.0:

Smartphones and mobile development went from a niche market to the fastest growing sector in the industry.
HTML 5 went from being a concept, to a working draft, to a technology that's being widely implemented across the web.
Two major versions of Windows were released.
Two major versions of Mac OSX were released.
Chrome came into existence and built up a user-base to rival that of Firefox's.
Opera released the largest revision to their browser in the last decade.

All the products and technologies a web browser is built on and interacts with evolve so quickly now, You simply can't have years between major releases anymore. It was an absolutely necessary step for them to take to remain viable in this market.

What is it means of "Nightly Builds" is it one of those "test" builds? Where they use it as a platform for test that got updated really often?

yes, it's a test build which is compiled every night (Hence the name).

All the changes (good or bad, it could create lots of bugs) applied the last 24hours by all the developers are compiled and a new version is released to users.
It's mainly for developers, to test the very last addition, bug fix, etc.

I'm using it to test my add-on and see if it's still working. I had to update it when they released firefox4, hopefully I had a lot of time between the nightly release of firefox4 and the official release to work on my add-on and fix it correctly. Now the official releases are coming too fast, I wouldn't have time to fix it in time.
But since then it's working without the need to update the code. I hope it will continue to be compatible without me working on it, I currently don't have time to release a new version.

I just tested my addon on Firefox 8 (nightly), all seems working fine, I'll update the max version on mozilla.

Out of the 19 plugins I have installed, 4 were marked incompatible. Of those 4, every one appears to work fine upon disabling the compatibility check.
