So, my stupid ass me accidentally updated my 3ds to 8.01 while trying to get Smash 4 to work. I was using a 2gb SD card before, and I saw smash 4 was only possible on a 4gb or higher SD card so I replaced it. I reinstalled everything the way I did it with my other card and somehow I still managed to update my system Nand instead of my emu Nand. Fortunately I made a backup of my system Nand (4.5) and have it safely stored on my pc. I initially thought I could just copy the files from my pc onto my SD card and it would work again, but then I found out that you actually need to downgrade through some hardware modifications.

I found this thread: http://gbatemp.net/threads/nand-flash-dump-3ds.353263/
However, as a tech noob, this thread seems very complicated to me and I don't have the slightest idea on how to downgrade my 3ds. I've only found a couple tutorials on youtube that show how to do it on a 3ds xl, but I own a regular 3ds myself and so the process is different. Does anyone know a good tutorial for the regular 3ds or can give me some simple instructions on this? I wouldn't mind paying some money either if someone knows a service in Europe, preferably the Netherlands, that can do this for me.

Many thanks,

Impzor

Talk to a guy here named gamesquest1. He's the best 3ds modder in your region and a cool guy.

there is a guy in france, infinity dreams or something, he has a nice site too, gamesquest1 is in the uk, france would be easier for him :)

(not trying to take business away from gamesquest though!)
nah don't worry about it, im npt bothered who does the work....i do realize the UK is pretty excessive with their postage costs so for some countries the return postage ends up as much as the actual work does, so whatever works out best for the OP

Looks good, but he asks 70 euro for the service, not including other costs. Then it's probably cheaper to send it to the uk. Still waiting to see if someone has something closer to me.

with a nand backup from the specific console if the person accidentally updates
Well, if you have a 4.5 backup of your own console you can flash the nand back.

edit: ninja'd :P
well yea, i know that, but im pretty sure these people dont magically have a nand for your console.. unless they expect you to give them that.. in which case whats the point? could do it yourself.

No, the OP has a backup of his own. The other people only help him soldering the nand pinouts of the 3DS mobo to a connector to be able to actually recover the backup.

yeah nobody said its magic, just some people cant solder, or it would cost them more buying a soldering iron etc than it would to just get someone with all the stuff already to do it....all the info is publicly available

My turn to be ninja'd

yes they specifically state, that you have to provide the NAND backup for the downgrade service
and as other people already said, not everyone owns a soldering iron or has the skills to do the job themselves

Yep, I do have a Nand backup of my own system so that isn't a problem. The problem is that I hardly know anything about soldering and I don't want to destroy my system in the progress.
Why are some services charging 49 euros for just the downgrading though? It doesn't even include the installation of a port it seems. Is it really that more difficult to downgrade the regular 3ds compared to a 3ds xl?
I might have found someone in my own country who can do it though, although I'm not sure he knows what I'm talking about.

tbh the standard is much more finicky than the XL, the XL is nice and easy, the original need you to remove the motherboard and everything, then you cant test it out without putting the whole thing back together, i was considering charging a bit more for the original over the XL, but decided its probably easier to just have the one price to save on confusion.....it is much easier doing the XL though

Hmm ok. I do have a 3ds xl, but I have it updated to the latest version and also have some downloaded games on it that I like to play online, so I don't think that will be an option either.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
