Gaming DOES the Pokewalker work with HG/SS rom?

I found out recently today from Nintendo that I can purchase a "replacement" pokewalker from them for $8.95 plus tax & shipping which isn't too bad. Though I have the rom, does anyone know if this works with the room or just the actual game cartridge?

I called up Nintendo myself first then GameStop to ask if the pokewalker communicates with the cartridge or the DS itself and they said it communicates with the cartridge...Though still I'm hanging on to a bit of luck that someone here might have gotten it to work using the rom.

Unfortunately it works through the built in IR port in the game card so a flashcard won't work with it. Sorry.
