I recently bought Skullgirls 2nd encore from the website GOG along with shovel knight and nuclear throne, and when I tried to play online with skullgirls it wouldn't let me, and even the anti piracy message came up (whats the square root of a fish? now I'm sad) I'd like to know really. I bought the game and am now a bit pissed cause I can't play online

Some years ago i read that some GOG games had cracked exe when installed, and there was also proof where RELOADED (or CODEX) watermark was found on the GOG's executable.
But that was years ago, i don't know about now.

Actually they still do that. If you open any of those .exe files in a hex editor like HxD you'll be surprised to find that many (probably all) older games use a cracked executable. In fact I noticed this while I was messing with SW: Rogue Squadron. It uses the same cracked exe released by same group. I was kind of surprised but I guess it saves them time. Besides what are the pirates going to do? sue them? I can't speak for the newer games though but it wouldn't surprise me they use cracked files for those as well.

I think its quite often the developers fault for the game cracks as they don't have the time to go through their old games and remove the DRM so they download a crack and pass the game over to GOG.
The same thing happens from time to time on steam games the devs don't really care because selling a cracked exe of your own game is not illegal and saves them time.

The article i read featured a newer game, released in 2012 or newer. Sorry but i can't remember what it was.
I would also link the article here, but i couldn't find it.
IMO, i think it's fine, as long as the original developer and/or publisher still get a portion of the revenue.

it was probably that, I know for sure I got shovel knight from gog, I might just be thinking that skullgirls is from the same place
It's very likely. I bought a Diablo 2 LOD expansion key from one of those places, and it was already used, so I couldn't play online with the expansion enabled.

I never heard of that, to be honest, but I do know that they are one of few legit companies that sell their games DRM free, which is a boon for many users, and a smart way to attract customers :P

Gambia, The
Gog certainly has the right to sell all those games, else there would have been a big lawsuit already heading there way. More so considering how they aren't keeping low profile and make no attempt to hide the game code.

Like a few pointed out it is likely the devs being lazy. The Hitman DRM incident from a few years back comes to mind where the DRM locked out people who legitimately bought the game. They had no idea how to revert it and even reinstalls didn't fix that shit. So what was the solution of the devs? Well use the crack of course.

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Booo.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.

Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
