seriously how stupid can ppl get I mean there were multiple incedents at my class and ppl are coming to me saying they bricked their 3ds and stuff (they come to me as I pretty much showed them how to get free games and guided them) and gbatemp got them here dang PPL ShOULD REALLY READ ABOUT CFW AND DOWNGRADING BEFORE THEY ACTUALLY DO IT SO THEY HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING ON HOW TO DO IT
TRUE! I read the guide multiple times before attempting and did research and read forums before trying. Now I'm on 11.2 A9lh LUMA3DS :)

I disagree. This is perhaps the perfect first softmod in my opinion, as you will have a virtually zero chance of anything going wrong as long as you follow the guide to the letter. If people are unable to read a guide, think that they can skip steps when they want, or aren't going to pay close attention when messing around with their console on any level, then maybe they shouldn't be fooling around with CFW of any kind.

In my mind there should be a big red banner at the very start that says "You must follow every applicable step of this guide to the letter. If you do not, you may brick!"

Well there's a virtually zero chance of a Wii softmod going wrong and it's a way less complicated process, with a much lower financial risk if you screw up, so I would say that was a much better place to start for beginners, and an original XBOX softmod (without HDD swap) is also pretty foolproof.

Unfortunately the constant stream of "something went wrong" threads on here is clear evidence that many people, in your words,
are unable to read a guide, think that they can skip steps when they want, or aren't going to pay close attention when messing around with their console on any level
. Penalty for this can be as much as $200 depending on your location.

I completely agree on the big red banner, the current warnings are not nearly scary enough.

Maybe so, but the procedure of softmodding a Wii (put a thing on the SD and open a letter) doesn't necessarily teach you anything. With Plailect's guide, for example, if you follow it to the letter you'll not only end up with a modded console, but you'd be surprised by how much you'll actually learn about how the 3DS works. This is one of the best things about Plailect's guide, in my view. I don't see how having installed the Homebrew Channel would teach you anything that would help in installing A9LH.

This is kind of my point. It's an excellent first softmod if you're actually willing to read. I believe that there are more first-timers who have successfully installed A9LH than have bricked. As I said before, if people care so little about their consoles that they're unwilling/unable to follow a guide, then maybe they shouldn't be involved with CFW.

It's me. I'm starting with this guide (although it's github version). I was reading it too many time, try to understand it before start hacking.
And right now, I'm end up with A9LH basic knowledge and can giving simple advise when some people ask.

Again, that's whay I advise people to read & understand (Not just following blind) @Plailect's guide while doing A9LH.

More succeeded than bricked could mean a 51%/49% split, barely better odds than flipping a coin. Today's (Jan 9th) fresh crop of "something went wrong" threads indicates a lot of people falling into your "people care so little about their consoles that they're unwilling/unable to follow a guide" category.

It's still true though, even if the ratio was 50%/50% if people can't follow simple directions they deserve the consequences. That's not cynical, it's just realistic. You wouldn't do major work on your car with a YouTube video and get pissed off if you break more than you fix; if you did, you're the textbook definition of an idiot. People around here are more than patient with those that refuse to follow simple directions. Especially when 80% of the time the people asking for help are cocky and defensive thinking they know everything because they got to step 14 without making a NAND backup. It honestly gets irritating after a while, especially when they throw blame on everything but themselves. "Oh, I forgot, my hand slipped, my kid did it, etc" when the reality is they either got too confident or too curious instead of just trying to understand what they're doing. I swear it seems like the guide needs a page timer so you can't use the links until you sit there long enough to read the info thrice.

You seem to be falling into a bit of a spotlight fallacy. Obviously we see far more instances of people making mistakes because they're the ones who make threads about their problems, whereas those who succeed obviously have no need to talk about it. My claim was based on a combination of my experiences of having guided people through the process, as well as intuition.

Only aware of 1 proper 'fail' not explainable - i.e. 2.1 softbrick - by clear user error.

But again that may have been caused by an ill informed system update

Maybe if you stop swinging from @Plailect nuts, you and the rest of the CFW marks would realize that this "gods gift to guides" has major flaws. Did you know that it don't explain that -citation needed- and that's why people are getting bricks. So lay off on newbies asking questions and don't answer if it irritates so much...

Except for the fact I have yet to see empirical evidence that programs in the guide caused bricks other than the vague bricks of OTPless installs (and those were never pinpointed so it was removed). Other than that, no. Every single case of someone bricking has been due to user error so that's not just fanboying, it's a fact. There are plenty other guides people could follow, or hell even if they researched into the programs, what they do, CFW etc, a lot is common sense (at least as far as knowing what you should backup or run all willy nilly). Not only that but half of the newbies don't even know what a hardbrick actually is. The majority think they're bricked because they have A9LH and no payload, while the rest just ignored the part that says you need to take out the SD card to boot into 2.1 EVERY time, on a N3DS, freaked out and updated when they were specifically told not to; but yeah, the guide is the problem.

@Lilligant claim he/she got bricked even he/she following every steps of the bilble.

Think again then

Hardmoded it, did the same thing again, worked
But, I think brick from installing A9LH is very very very rare case except user error.

There is always an exception but people also tend to "say" they did (or didn't) follow every step quite often that led to a brick. That and always seem to forget that hardware issues become a factor. You know like, just because your DS works fine one day, doesn't mean it always will. Electronics don't last forever so there is always a chance of something just going kaput for no reason. I'm not saying you CAN'T brick, installing A9LH comes with that risk itself in like a 1% ratio. I'm just saying outside of user error, it's definitely nowhere close to 50/50.

That's why when people come here and ask for a way to hack, I offer them 2 choice, explain the pros and cons,
and let them decide what to do on their console by themselves.

I agree with that 100%. That's the main problem though is that most people ask AFTER they already messed up instead of asking before they start. I mean sometimes it's as easy as using incompatible files and running SafeA9LHInstaller to brick you, people just need to pay attention or you know end up with issues.
