I've read that the dock has some proprietary shit in it that allows hdmi to work only with the dock. I read somewhere one person used a usb c to hdmi to a monitor and fried the monitor input so be careful.

It is confirmed that you can use a usb c male to female from the dock to the console if you don't want to physically have it in the dock, but you still need the dock for hdmi.

Why would you want to do this without a dock? Ruins the whole point.
in case i want to take it somewhere without bringing the whole giant dock with me.

ok, i was expecting that. leave it to Nintendo to make you pay a crap ton of money for something that could be done cheaper and better.

Among other things, the dock has a DisplayPort to HDMI converter, which implies that it uses USB-C's DisplayPort mode, not HDMI mode. A regular USB-C to HDMI cable wouldn't work in that case.

There's also a microcontroller and flash ROM, so it's likely that some initialization sequence is needed in order to get video output.

For starters one USB-C to HDMI cable won't scratch up your Switch's screen thanks to Nintendo's faulty design.

As long as you're not shoving it in, and actually being gentle, this shouldn't be a problem. I do agree Nintendo should have seen this coming though.

The dock is a chunk a pretty plastic with a tiny board in it

Some enterprising third party needs to make an empty redesigned shell which will accept the pcb guts of the official dock or add extra features like inbuilt ethernet(sic)? and optical out if possible.
