I gave it a shot and was enjoying it but after a few hours as I was near the end of the first dungeon I had to find and kill two monsters and take the eyes they were carrying. In the process I got spotted by a few enemies which lead to their alertness meter (or whatever it's called) going up and battles just carried on and on and I gave up. I'm just too impatient for turn based battles.

If you were generally enjoying it but just got stuck, that's okay, you can always try again later. I do that all the time I still have saves from years ago that are still sitting there on games. I recommend to give it another shot. To me it's in my top 10 games ever made, and I don't beat a ton of rpgs either but I had to know what happened storywise without just looking at a Youtube video. I'm not saying it's an easy game but there are way harder rpgs out there. Try it again at some point, doesn't have to be right now. If you own the game there's no rush.

If you just absolutely give up I would give Persona 5 Strikers a shot, the gameplay is more action but the story is fantastic on that one too.

I have a weird relationship with JRPG's. If I'm not enjoying it, I automatically stop dead after the first third of the game. After that, I can't bring myself to do the rest.

P5 didn't give me that issue, and I played through all 100 hours of the original. I'm not sure what the magic formula is, since JRPG's are repetitious by nature, but P5 was a good time for me. If JRPG's aren't your thing, I'd recommend playing one of the essentials, like Grandia, Final Fantasy VI, or Dragon Quest VIII, just to see if one sticks.
