The homebrew alone makes the psp the best console around, yes the DS has a stronger fanbase and some really great games, but the PSP hands down is the perfect console, especially if they finally released some better games. They have a lot of good games.... I could list them but that would be dumb. Look into it yourself www.gamefaqs.com

I use my PSP for GBA games I never had a chance to play, and the cards to make GBA work on my DS isn't worth the trouble.

I bought a PSP last year for mostly homebrew and catching up on those Capcom titles and Dreamcast ports I missed out on all these years.
The DS is fine but I found myself bored with the libary in the end.
I'm more of the hardcore arcade gamer type and the DS has mostly Puzzle, RPGs, and a crap load of casual crap games that can barely be called a game let alone software.

The PSP has plenty of that too, but has more shooters and fighters that I tend to enjoy alot more.
Plus the emulation is downright great for a portable machine.
Also nice web based homebrew and Custom Firmware gives plugin support which opens alot of cool things. Ingame music controls, Standard definition fixs, cheats, and even an ingame RTclock in the corner. (I like to play and see the time)

So as a homebrew powerhouse that you can easily find parts floating about to fix it with, its a pretty great choice.
As a commercial product alone though its rather lacking.
I can't say theres many games I like for the system. I find most playstation games bland but thankfully not casual crap bad.
Just kinda uninspired feeling alot of times.
Though I've found some personal gems I wouldn't have known I liked till I played them.
Also the Capcom games are good for it.

Overall ya, the PSP is kinda dead commercialy but its still a good homebrew machine.
Heck I use it to watch Youtube and junk alot of times.

Personally I wouldn't throw away a PSP until ya try out all the homebrew and find a use for it.
Heck at the least you could make it into an extra screen for your comp to display contact status for an IM or CPU heat and other junk like that with PSPdisp.
Its a real portable homebrew powerhouse.
Gaming libary is decent and has plenty of gems and generally look rather nice for a portable.
So ya, not all that dead homebrew wise but slowing down commercialy yes.

A great buy for the homebrew alone, no need to pirate PSP games, homebrew has ya covered

Maybe buy a few hard to find/get games perhaps, theres a good gem now and then.

I don't think the PSP was a fail in any way (Aside from the PSPgo.)

Sony made lot's of money, so it's not a fiscal failure; And then we get to have a portable machine that can run tons and tons of homebrew (Way to many emulators to mention.) and a decent portable movie player.

I don't know if I am qualified to answer this, as anyone that knows me, knows that I wouldn't buy a system unless I can hack and pirate it to hell, but I digress. The doesn't seem to be a whole lot of great games for the PSP, and the PSP GO is just pure fail. Those who actually bought games can't transfer the UMDs to it, it has a smaller screen, it is overpriced, and the games are overpriced for something that is locked to a single console/account with no physical media.

Retail only side it is a bit awkward. The popularity of the DS meant that developers ignore the PSP (which is more powerful and therefore more costly to develop for) to churn their games out onto. Its still made money but there are few very good games on it. Its a very versatile system that is just underused.

Oh yeah and a message to everyone complaining about no 2nd analogue stick. If you have 2 thumbs using the analogue sticks that leaves exactly 2 shoulder buttons for easy use while consoles usually have 4. Its almost unworkable...

PSP has great graphic capabilities. The controls are decent, the analog stick could be better (and there should be two).

It has a pretty good list of games to play. I'll never regret buying my PSP, even if it wasn't able to be modded.
Crisis Core alone made it worth it for me.

i have to agree with that. i bought my psp for cfw only...turn's out i had a ta-088v3 motherboard -_-
but i am able to play on it so mehh...
i have played some crappy to great games.
and i must say.
economically it fails
but graphically it's great.
and there are alot of great games out there.
and some are coming aswell
i for one thought gundam assault survive to be a great game.
monster hunter...meh could go with it.
disgaea 2 (Who doesn't ?)
so i agree and disagree on different factors

I agree, that's a great game on it's own. Square Enix make any console worth buying.

I'd like to say the PSP is a total failure, but there are always a few franchises (Gundam anyone?!?!) that don't seem to get proper representation anywhere else. Also, they have a lot of great ports from the PS2 (Kenka Banchou 1, Warship Gunner 2, Tenchu Kurenai, Way of the Samurai 1+2, Gran Turismo 4 lol), which was my favorite system of all time. I still think the actual system and controls feel like junk, but you can get used to anything.

I wouldn't say its a failure, I wouldn't say its great either.
I brought mine for hacking but if you compare DS with PSP,
DS wins handsdown thanks to its large game library.

I wouldn't say the PSP is a failure, just no where near the popularity of the DS. Now the PSP Go, THAT is a failure.

But now because of Failware 6.20, we're stuck with sh*** Sony crap
What do you mean? I successfully hacked my PSP, and it came with FW 6.20

I'm sure there will be more PSP games coming out soon. MGS: Peacee Walker, RE PSP, and KHBBS are coming out, along with Prinny 2 and (probably not a good game to some) Hatsune Miku Project Diva 2.

The only console that failed really was the GCN.. the gap between the DS and the PSP wasn't NEARLY as huge as the gap between GCN and PS2.

edit: fixed wording

what fails for me is only 1 stick. If it had 2 sticks it would be great and better for devs to port there ps2 games over to the psp, but since it only has 1 they have to change button layouts which makes a lot of games crap.

I got a psp been having it since they came out and the pass yr maybe yr and a half i havent even played it because there isnt any good games on it. the last game i played was MGS SP.

I bought my GoW Edition PSP just for custom firmware, to download pirated games and enjoy the crap outta them, apart from getting GoW and Superbad UMDs for free inside the pack, I own no other game, and I do not intend to buy any either.
On a side note, I'm enjoying Pokemon HeartGold these days on my DSi, while on DSL I've got WarioWare D.I.Y and Sonic All Stars Racing, and finally on the DS Phat I sometimes play "Rooms". (Proud Owner of 3 Nintendo DSs)
