Question: has anyone ever succeeded in installing coldboothax (aside from smea)? We keep hearing about users bricking after an attempted installation, but are there any known successes? If not, then I really can't comprehend how a person could decide it to be a good idea to try and install coldboothax, but hey, that's just me.

Yes

The important point is to make sure that haxchi DS VC is on your NAND instead of USB.

While I am interested in coldboothax as a concept, people shouldn't try something that evidently has a high brick rate. We're quite lucky that Haxchi and coldbotohax have appeared at around the same time, as the former suffices until a safer method of coldboothax is found.

The last 3 or 4 people on the bricking list had their DS VC game on their USB, that's why a brick here. It's not that fear for those interested in coldboothax to avoid but make sure the game is on NAND.

the haxchihax is safe up to the point for using the brain age only to enter rednand?
Haxchi is safe on its own, unless you use Wupclient to do something extremely stupid somehow.
The danger is that haxchi is half of coldboothax, which it itself just the fact that you can change the boot title of the system.

If you leave haxchi as its own thing, you get an icon on the home screen you can launch after boot or from the quick start menu.
If you try making haxchi the boot title, you get either a brick or permanent rednand, and I mean permanent, as there's currently no known way to change the sysNAND back (aside from hardmod).

Just edit the xml back to the default title. Still, better not mess with that just to avoid an extra click....

PLEASE STOP LINKING BACK TO GUIDES ON COLD BOOT HAX. just use quick start it's 100% safe and has 0% brick rate and the boot time is completely identical. No it is currently impossible to undo coldboothax if you manage to install it without bricking

It can be undone with soldered Nand if the user weren't stupid enough to try this without proper backups. It is just about restoring the original xml back.
