Hacking DLC on Retail Cart

Hi everyone! If I were to download a .cia of a dlc for a game, if I installed it would it work with my retail copy of the game? Or would it only work if I had the game installed through other means (.cia or eShop)

There is no reason for it not to, I have Fire Emblem Awakening DLC installed through a .CIA file and I run Awakening from a Sky3DS cart. Not 100% the same thing as running an actual Awakening cart but I cant think of any reason it wouldnt work

EDIT: Assuming the region matches and any relevant updates have been downloaded

If the dlc is the same region of your retail version, probably yes

Yes, but only in emuNAND.
If it's a free DLC you can download from eShop, in sysNAND with Sproof Firmware
