Only needed if you want to have the status LED. The optimal ohm value depends on the type and color of the LED you use (voltage = 3.3V if you want to calculate the optimal value). As long as you don't use low-current LEDs, the following values should work fine:
Red=120 Ohm / Green+Yellow = 90 Ohm / Blue = 30 Ohm'

The picture there isnt correct - but this is definately the correct kind of socket (i.e. 0.3" wide, rather than 0.6"). Also don't panic about the high price - this is for 17 pieces!!

About the capacitor: That will do nicely for the chip, but not the programmer. The programmer needs a larger capacitance capacitor, if you get my drift.
