Disk Defragmenter Stuck At 1%

I'm having an issue with one of my hard disks. it gets stuck at 1% on consolidated pass 1. I've tried unplugging the drive, using a different port, even reflashing a disk image, but it keeps getting stuck on this percentage. what else can I try? oh, I think I may have stopped it at some point, a while back, which is when this begun. thanks.

Have you tried checking it for errors first?

hdd, and yes, I checked for errors. nothing is fragmented, just doesn't go above 1% on consolidating free space. would reformatting fix this? I read that a single file may be responsible. is there any way to find out where it's getting hung?

No need to fragment disk if it is external or SSD. If there was a bad sector problem, fragment won't solve, ran a chkdsk?

I think I may have corrected the problem by using cmd prompt. now, both the normal gui and cmd prompt work correctly.
