I'd also like to know how everybody's doing this.
I think it involves SoftMii, but I don't really know anything else.

Using anything theres a chance of bricking your wii.
I make themes and i never bricked myself using a theme.(Im just that good)
When people release themes there normally tested or atleast thats what i do with mine.

If your going to use themes, have preloader installed. This way if you brick you will be able to recover. That being said I have installed many themes and never had any sort of brick. Find the soft mii tweak toy(which is in the softmii package-so pretty easy to find). Then download themes from softmii.org or anywhere else you can find them just be sure to use the right versions for your region and firmware. For example, 0000042... themes are 3.2U, 0000045... are 3.2E ect.

does anyone know of a tutorial concerning making your own themes using mymenu and myscripts? I've got the just of it - I have downloaded a good number of myscript files for different aspects of the system menu - but something more concrete would be nice.

also, does anyone have a PSD template for the system menu?

lastly, anyone have a myscript for the system menu itself? I have all the spinning discs and cursor scripts, but nothing for the background and such.

    Thanks in advance.

Here I took softmii tweaks from 2.9.5 and up'd it for you. Put the app file in the softmii folder which is in the root.

    edit

Might want to install preloader if you are worried about a brick....I really don't see how you can brick besides installing an out of region app file.
