My wife bought a TTX classic controller for the wii u to play guitar hero but it doesn't work with the game. Does anyone know why.

I believe Guitar Hero games for Wii only support the Wiimote. There's an easy way to check: look at the back of the game cover, at the top right there are pictures of game controllers supported for the game. If you don't see a Classic Controller, only the Wiimote, then there's your problem.
