Hacking Controller help with retroarch

I have retroarch on the vwii. Games are running fine, but I can only seem to get the actual wiimote to work. I am trying to get either a gamecube controller or a wii classic controller to work, but I am having no luck. I go under settings and choose controller 1 or 2 and try to map the buttons, but it doesn't recognize anything.

Is this possible? What am I doing wrong?

Also, if you scroll down to the description, you can see that it specifically says it's "(Not for Wii U)".

It works flawlessly for everything outside of retroarch.
