Gaming Considering Ubuntu, is it worth it?

It's pointless. It offers me nothing that OSX doesnt, while not offering me things like final cut.

It's pointless. It offers my nothing Linux doesn't, while still costing a lot of money and requiring proprietary hardware.

Linux is certainly a different beast altogether, if you don't tend to run that many games on your laptop, it's great. If you have to restart your computer a lot, you'll soon realize it isn't really worth the trouble, as XP is still a great OS. Also: Do not go over the edge and have compiz always running and use some sort of black theme. Compiz looks great but it can slow your computer to a crawl, and black themes look great, but they make most web pages out there unreadable.

Black themes make web pages unreadable? It dosnt skin the web page it skins firefox which you would most likely be using.

As for Compiz, its fine. Ive played games with compiz running before, no noticeable performance drop at all. One thing I have noticed a few times before that after playing for long periods of time with consitent alt-tabbing and window supression it will eventually start to lag up, but I havnt noticed this any more and there are updating compiz it seems every few weeks. But for safe measure i just keep it disabled for gaming, but for just computer use its fine to keep on. If you really want to play a game on Ubuntu there is most likely a guide out there to help you getting running, I have WoW installed, ive had steam installed with Half Life 2 and CS 1.6 at one point, Starcraft and theres a guide to get Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion running that i might do soon, it really isnt that hard and actually what i did for wow is just copy paste the folder from my windows disk on ubuntu and copy it over, enable opengl (directx does work but no where near as good as opengl) and then just run it.

Installed Ubuntu 8.04 w/ wubi and I can't get it to show all the wireless networks in the area like it should. Any one else have this problem?
