My mother jokingly suggested a youfundme account, but I don't want any money from anyone. However, I'm going to quit the scenes, because I'll be useless. I already planned to with the ps5/switch, but I was compiling things for the ps5, which made me feel relevant. Compiling feels like the only purpose to me being in the scenes at this point. There are a lot of people with more knowledge than I have, so it's not like I can't be replaced. I don't want to quit though, but I don't know what to do at this point.

Your mom is the funny one, the guys here can probably chip in some money to buy you a laptop for everything you have done for people here on temp.

Hardware issues can be hard to troubleshoot/fix over the internet, especially motherboard related ones. Guess you can only be patient and let it be diagnosed by a technician

Please don't leave. Even if you can't provide compilations for some time, you can share your knowledge based on your very own experience on the matter, and that my friend, can't be replaced with anything from anyone else.

Thanks. you are too kind. I've always felt appreciated here, so it's difficult to know what to do. I've felt I held some value for my ability to compile, but now it feels like I might not be able to do that, at least for a while, if something is seriously wrong with the laptop. I don't really know if my disk image from this laptop has any chance of working on another, and I don't want to start over. What should I do?

I figured as much considering the laptop with the problem is using an m2, and it's windows. I got all this info from best buy. I replaced the fan myself, so they suggested power as the problem. Apparently, they can't diagnose the problem unless I had bought the Dell from them. What a load of shit.

If BB is not just BSing, then it may be down to a training/parts/liability issue.

I’m only an amateur at this type of hardware diagnostics, but I can see a repairer getting a multimeter out, checking voltages, etc.

I don't really know if my disk image from this laptop has any chance of working on another, and I don't want to start over. What should I do?

It may be possible, the biggest issues may be dealing with drivers, any device specific software (e.g. the Dell branded software) and the license key (mainly if the new system doesn’t have one in bios, although I’ve heard people move their existing installs/oem keys to a new system just fine).

What did you use to backup the drive? I know some backup software even promotes making it easy to restore to a new system.

You may however have some issues with certain DRM e.g. itunes, although usually device activations can be reset either through the software, website or by contacting support.

1. You can look at the fans itself. The wires are different colors. Are they in same order on the new and old fans (plug side)? Not mixed up?
2. Try applying voltage to the old fan somehow (2 needles and 5V power adapter, black and red wires) and see if it starts spinning.
3. You can try to take a multimeter and check if the voltages are being supplied to the terminals of the fan connector. Just be careful not to short-circuit anything around.
Again, the laptop fan does not start spinning right away when you turn laptop on. It (fan) may be silent until a certain temperature, and only then turn on.
4. It wouldn't hurt to visit the "BIOS" and check the settings for the fans. It is unlikely that there are a lot of settings available (after all, it is a laptop), but it would be good to make sure.
5. The image will not be easy to deploy on a system with different hardware (chipset, sound, network, etc.). The more different hardware is, the more problems (drivers at least) will occur. And, of course, it will lead to the loss of the Windows OEM license (but there are many nuances here, it all depends on what (platform) the image is transferred to).

Without getting my hands on it its difficult to diagnose but one thing that happened to me before.... Does your new fan actually work?? I bought a replacement for my desktop a few years ago and it turned out the new one I had was faulty so got it replaced, been fine ever since! Long shot but does happen!

As for leaving.... Get the handcuffs out people, lock that door.... We can't lose you @godreborn! I'd happily donate to the God needs his laptop Reborn crisis fund if it becomes a thing!

I'd suggest you keep future project backups on cloud storage or a seperate drive, so such cases become less hassle incase of hardware failure. I'd to learn it the hard way a few too many times :rofl2:

Tell me about it. I have actually deleted my whole PC and laptop more than 3 times. after the third time, I learned to back up to the clouds. :)

@godreborn had you tried to connect the fan directly to power source, the fan have a +12 and a GND cables which can be connected to red and black cables on any of the power source connectors it's a quick test.

The tech is going to try a bios update, which I already tried. If it doesn't work, it's the mobo. I'll still be able to use the computer as the cooler keeps it cool, but I'll need to buy a new one. I'll have to borrow money from my parents, since I only get $609/month with disability.
