You can jailbreak it with Redsn0w, but it will be tethered (you will have to plug your device into your computer and rejailbreak everytime you want to turn it on). You might as well wait for a few days, since a new untethered jailbreak for 4.2.1 is going to be released soon (probably an updated version of Greenpois0n).

hi. i just got a ipod tocuh (I think is second generation since its 8gb) and its on 4.2.1. version mc086LL (8C148)
is there any jailbreak for it? or a way to downgrade it?

iPod touch

* iPod touch 1G
* iPod touch 2G old bootrom
* iPod touch 2G new bootrom (up to, and including, 4.1)
* iPod touch 3G (up to, and including, 4.2.1)
NOTE: There is NO such thing as an "8 GB iPod touch 3G." It is an iPod touch 2G with a newer bootrom.
* iPod touch 4G (up to, and including, 4.2.1)
You've correctly identified your device: you have an iPod touch 2G (new bootrom).

I have some good news and bad news about it, though (I'll start with the latter

).

The bad news is, there's no 4.2.1 jailbreak for your particular iPod. But don't despair; you can downgrade to iOS 4.1 and use greenpois0n or limera1n for an untethered jailbreak.

Be sure to save your device's SHSHs for iOS 4.1 with Cydia/TinyUmbrella, to keep your ability to use those jailbreak tools!

Actually, redsn0w's support for the iPod touch 2G (new bootrom) was removed (I think as of 0.9.6b2). I heard from somewhere that it involved not having permission to use the steaks4uce exploit.

Haha, jailbreaking is great. I have installous and dtunes and can download free apps and songs, thanks to everyone who helped make jailbreakme.!

I was expressing discontent, using a quote from him...

EDIT: On the guide, I added an arrow pointing to greenpois0n, for the iPod touch 2G (new bootrom).

Rumors suggest that it might support custom boot logos/verbose boot for all devices. Greenpois0n RC5 is supposed to include surprises....

The guide has been updated for the (currently Mac-exclusive) release of greenpois0n RC5.

UPDATE: Also removed limera1n from the guide.

whats rc 5?
will it be untethered for Iphone 4 4.21 and ipod 2G 8GB MCmodel 4.2.1?

Yup, it provides an untethered jailbreak for every device on 4.2.1. (Except the iPhone 3G.) It currently has a few quirks, though.

What are these "quirks"?

Loader.app having issues installing Cydia due to the servers being hammered.

Some people are having issues getting greenpois0n to run at all.

Would be nice to add in the tutorial for the newly released Greenpois0n that, if your device is already JB, at the end you will NOT have the loader as mentioned in the tuto... I was looking for it all over and couldnt...

But I rebooted and it worked marvelously ;-)

Unrealted Question: am I the only one have the worst difficulty to turn off my damn iPad??

The Tuto says to turn it off... which I do... I plug it into my PC it turns itself back on... I try to shut it back down, it doesnt work, if I hold the shut down and the home together the ipad reboots, doesnt turn back Off... I had more problems turning the ipad off than jailbreaking it. Seriously!
