Hacking cIOS and IOS

Can somebody explain to me what a cIOS and a IOS
are used for?, I have tried to search else where but I
come up with nothing, I am trying to understand everything
I need to know about modding my wii safetly so I dont fuck
it up. But there is a lot of processes that come along with it.

IOS= Internal Operative System
cIOS= Custom Internal Operative System

the cIOS is needed for making the backups run in a non-chiped Wii, and the IOS are the things that make the Wii functions...

Ether, is there a way I can start over like on the Iphone and hit restore and start from scratch as if my wii were brand new out of the box?

FORMAT, but it will not delete any IOS, just channels and saves I think

Ok, so then say I want to use the 0.3 beta loader and use the cIOS that came with that bundle.
how would I go from the cIOS from the 0.3 gamma back to the 0.3 beta cIOS?,
