How old is your Wii? IF it is a newer one you may NEED newer firmware but I am not positive. I am just thinking hat you might have a D2B drive which was not supported in beta1.

Hey guys, my parts arrived today from Futurlec so I decided to mod my wii. For me, Futurlec experience was perfect since I am located in Europe and all other companies wanted $30 - $60 for delivery while Futurlec only $4. The parts came exactly as I expected, and a big thank you to those that took the time posted the Fututrlec list.

So I built everything with great caution, I knew what I was doing since I read A LOT about it in the forums. But..... it is not quite working 

I downloaded the windows compiled avrdude from this threat (somebody posted it... THANK YOU!). However I forgot to download the latest firmware, so the firmware on my chiip is beta1.

I installed the chiip without any problems. I turn on the Wii and the LED lights up. There is NO blinking. So I think that means that everything went right with the hardware part (right?).

I tried a backup game with no success. Tried to burn it at lower speed of 4x, again nothing. Media is Verbatim and burner is NEC.

Also, people reported that with beta1 firmware the Wii was not playing the original games. Mine plays them fine. Is this good or bad????


So this is my story. I would really appreciate any help or tips. Thanks a lot!!!!

Hi, i've got the same problem here. Wii Originals just work, Wii Backups same as GC Backups don't. Most of the time i'm getting the "something went wrong, reboot your wii dude!" message but after flashing to the actual Chiip Firmware i'm getting (translated by myself, i'm seeing the german message) "Not able to read the disc. Please read the Wii manual for further information".

No blinking on the Chiip, the LEDs just lighted up.

The Wii is a PAL from the European Launch Date (08.12.06). I don't know which drive chip it uses, since I forgot to check this.

Any Ideas?

Make sure that you are using the latest firmware, and also the correct version(PAL), otherwise it won't work.

I did. I'm using chiip-v0_9_1-atmega8-pal.hex. But i've also testet several openwii Firmwares (don't know which drive chip i have). The OpenWii setup disc worked sometimes and it let me set the region code - at least it's telling me it did.

Other burned media is just making some reading noises (sounds like the laser is searching for the beginning of the media) and then gives the black screen that tells me to reboot.

Is it possible that the soldered connections are wrong? Would the LED light up if that would be the case?

If the setup disc works at all, then you have it soldered correctly. What media are you using, and also what burner? One, or both of those could be your problem.

I've used Tevion DVD-R and TDK DVD+R. The Setup Disk is on a TDK DVD+R. I've burned all Disk with 4x Speed. The burner is a Samsung SH S182M.

What is the the rated speed of the media? You might want to try burning the games at 8x or 16x. I have the Samsung SH-S183L, and I've used various -R and +R with no problems burning at 8x or 16x.
