Gaming Cheat newbie needs help

Greetings.

I have sniffed around here for days now, searching for a way to use cheats on my DS. I do not have an Action Replay, but my friend who doesn't have one seems to be able to use cheats without it directly from his DS. So i decided to try to. He's running a EDGE while i'm using a DSTT. I've read and downloaded as said the USRCHEAT.DAT and insert it into the TTMenu, but i find no way to read the file, so i ran moonshell and tried to start the .dat file from there. But there's this message saying "not support ext.DAT" I have not idea what that means and so ran out of ways. Do i need so other programs to run it, or must i really get a AR?

For the DSTT you need to highlight the rom and hit select to bring up the cheat menu. You don't physically open the DAT file.
