Hacking Cfg USB Loader Freezing In-Game?

I've read a few threads but I still haven't quite find the answer I'm looking for. It seems that recently my Cfg USB loader keeps freezing in game. I've tried loading the default 249, mload 222/223/224, etc..., could it be my external hard drive doing the spin down issue? I'm just not sure

Just giving it a quick bump here and providing more info now. I'm using an HD3200 AAKS external hard drive. I'm wondering if my best option would be to open up my enclosure and connect the SATA to my comp and run hdparm, but would anyone know if its something other than spindown errors?
