I tried some of my friends physical cartridges and they all asked me to update but the cart fw is lower than the actual fw. (Botw, Mario Odyssey...) I had deleted pending updates after 5.0.0 came out and since a long time ago, my switch has no internet connections and is in airplane mode. Why is it asking me to update and is it a game update or a sys update? Also it doesn't ask me to update when I start a digital game. (Like stardew valley)

You don't say what FW you're on, but that's a game update, FW sais 'System update'.

It's irrelevant though as you won't be able to update now anyway on 4.1.0 and bellow so you will just have to skip and press 'start software' everytime or update.

the console remembers games that need updates from last time it was connected to the internet, there's nothing you can do about it it's going to ask you every time forever now.

I think you can still update it. At least I was able to on Thursday.

Nope. Early Friday was the cutoff for game updates

Also OP that is a game update not a firmware update. Got the same thing with splatoon 2 when I got the starter edition on Friday.

Alright, thanks guys.

You might still be able to if you have another switch with 5.0 through the peer-sharing game update feature, but I haven't tested it or heard any success from it.

But the only game I own is mario odyssey and the lastest update is just the online only luigi balloon mode. So it really doesn't matter.

Just tested. My personal switch is 4.1.0, and my brother's is 5.0.0 inserted my splatoon 2 cart into the 5.0.0, updated the software, then used the "Match Version with Local Users" feature to share software update 2.3.2 with my 4.1.0 switch.
So now I can play online for a bit until that gets pulled too.

So yes this is a viable option and it does work.

Edit: I'm receiving Kirby tomorrow so I'll be giving that a test as well after work.

So tested with Kirby today. Found some cool info.
Firstly, update 1.1.1 for Kirby requires 5.0.0.
Secondly, I found that the "Match Version with Local Users" option will also send over a firmware update if the software update won't work on the current firmware.
Luckily, it tells you it's sending a system update and that you can cancel before it finishes downloading.
Thankfully I caught it before it downloaded.
