Hi everyone! 😊

I recently received a Switch as a gift from a colleague who told me it was "bricked" and showed no signs of life.

After some troubleshooting, I managed to get the Switch into RCM mode, where it’s recognized by my PC, and I can inject payloads successfully. I even managed to boot into the standard Switch OS using Hekate.

However, here’s my main issue: The Switch will only show any activity when I activate RCM and inject a payload. Without connecting it to a PC (or using one of those dongles I’ve seen online), it stays on a black screen. Even when I use Hekate to boot into the original OS, it won’t reboot properly—it just goes back to a black screen.

My question:
  • Is there any way to fix this so that the Switch boots without requiring a PC or external hardware every time?
  • I’d love to keep CFW if possible, but my main goal is to get back into the original OS (or at least have a setup where the Switch can boot independently).
P.S.: I’m new to this topic and had to quickly learn about RCM, payloads, and everything else just to get the Switch running again.

Thanks so much for any advice you can give! 🙏

Install a modchip if you don't want to use a computer or dongle. But you should see if it boot up to Horizon OS fine before installing a modchip.

But isn't it possible to boot at least into the original OS without any dongels, PCs, etc.?
Sounds like AutoRCM is enabled. Disable it.
I've already checked that. However, AutoRCM is sadly already disabled :/
Even if is press "reboot" in Hekate and then choose OFC nothing happens

In this case, to me at least, sounds like your sysnand is bricked.
The easy way to restore it would be if you(or your friend) have the NAND Backup that he should have done when he modded the switch.
If you don't have, I think you'll need a donor switch to restore yours, in simple terms quote-unquote, "cloning the donor information into yours". On gbatemp you can find a guide to unbrick without a nand backup:

If it is on autoRCM, then you want to use hekate stock option, if you have no AutoRCM on, and Stock OS meaning no CFW and it won't boot there is something wrong with the NAND.
