DS coder Alekmaul has released the first version of Cannon Fodder DS, a top-down action/strategy game based on the Amiga PC title of the same name. In this game you control a squad of soldiers that must maneuver their way through different levels of enemy territory while completing the various mission objectives. For the full story about this homebrew, visit the author's project page linked below.

Awesome, I saw the prerelease video a week or so back and it caught my attention in a big way. Cannon fodder would probably be the game I would have requested to be ported to the DS above all others.

Edit: did the first couple of missions. Controls are pretty good once you get used to them (by virtue of that alone it beats all other non mouse cannon fodder ports and owing to some advantages you can get from swinging the screen around possibly even superior in some ways) and I would certainly stump up some money for this as a commercial title (having played other top down strategy on the DS I can see where some might accuse graphics of being murky but they more than do the job).

Chuff me yes!

This is a must have, an essential classic. It has been ported many many times and a lot of them have been very well done (apart from the mobile phone ports). Special mention to the Gameboy Color port which was done so well, great controls, looked and sounded great for GBC title.

Alekmaul is a legend for this
i love the game seeing the trailer in youtube had the theme song with words which is great
DOWNLOADING NOW

Save function fails for me on iSMM (causes the level to attempt to start then freezes after the animation). Anyone else have this issue?

I meant to link this up earlier but if we are getting into the cannon fodder sway of things then http://worldofstuart.excellentcontent.com/cf2/cf2.htm is a great read.
With this, elite, populous and Lemmings ported to the DS it is pretty much Simulcra, chaos engine and Syndicate to round out my Amiga must plays (I must get round to trying them out in the amiga emulators).

I'd like to see a lot of Team 17's work as well.

amiga? i thought t'was a snes game. hmm.. awesome game anyway

the problem was that it was hard as u get couple of soldier who die (if i am not mistaken) in a single shot
game was really fun like a similar DS game called operation vietnam. cannon fodder is definitely better.

i really get annoyed with games that make u die in one hit eg. contra and even mario. thats why i cant play such games except on emu

What I loved was that it was one of those games where you have the same team for many levels and then one of them got shot and that's it...death...you actually felt sorrow for them. I know something was like that in some others games before but it was a first for me.

The sequel wasn't anywhere as good but I did like how they changed things to a sci-fi perspective. A third one was in development and was supposed to be very advanced but Codemasters didn't want to release it. Such a shame Codemasters took them and throw the team away.

I'll have to check if the JOOLS cheat is still there.

Well, no, no cheat currently, will check what was this cheat in original version.

This is awesome.

How do you throw grenades/launch rockets? o.O

Use fire key and click again with stylus to launch things. Will certainly change this behaviour in next release, will wait for suggesiton about that.
