Every guide seems to imply this is the case, but I haven't seen it explicitly stated. If I need to get another what would a recommended size be? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I just want to have definitive answer before I buy another SD card.

Yes, it can definitely be done.

I use a 32 GB SanDisk micro SD card. Before starting the process, I created a backup of the "Nintendo" directory in the SD card. Then, I manually created a 16 GB FAT32 partition and dedicated the rest of the free space for the EXT4 partition. After finishing copying the Linux rootfs to the EXT4 partition, I copied the "Nintendo" directory back to the FAT32 partition. It works like a charm.

TL;DR: Just create a bigger FAT32 partition and you should be good to go.

Switch firmware added support for it in 5.0, but F0Fs linux kernel uses a custom driver for the SD reader which has exFAT support. What the Switch OS supports is irrelevant.

That doesn't make sense. I was referring to the ability of the Horizon OS to use exFAT on the first micro SD partition, not Linux. I know F0F's kernel has a custom driver; otherwise, the second EXT4 partition wouldn't even work in the first place. But that only takes effect when Linux is ran through RCM.

From what I understand the Switch can use exFat so long as you've triggered the update for it (unsure which FW version added support). This is done by inserting a 64GB or higher card in the switch, you're then prompted to update the Switch but this will also update you to the latest FW

I'm currently on 4.0.1 and my 200GB card prompted me for the SD card update but I'm hoping homebrew get around this by using partitions i.e Fat32 for official and a larger exFat for homebrew like you said.

Weird. I could have sworn exFAT compatibility got added on 5.0.0. Well, just go ahead and try.
Maybe it's now built in to the regular updates, but support has been there since the beginning as a separate update. Upon inserting an exFAT formatted card for the first time you would be prompted to install the update for it.

That explains it. Thanks. I got my Switch when 5.0.0 was already around and I updated my console right away, so I didn't have the chance to tinker a bit more with lower firmwares.

Well from my basic testing, it seems exfat cannot be used to boot linux with the current methods.

@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!

@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
