I don't want to chip or softmod my PS2 but is it true that they're still playable in black and white?

In this instance I'd be using my PS3 60GB which is compatible with PS2 games and makes them look much nicer than originally on the ol' PS2.

PS2 is region locked. PS3 that is backward compatible is also region locked when inserting PS2 disc.

Keep in mind there is a 2 frames lag on PS3 when playing PS2 games. The only way to eliminate the lag is to play it on 480i/480p. This may or may not be a problem when playing games that requires fast and precise timing.

What about DLC? that region locked too?
DLC is region locked, somewhat. You can download any region of DLC with different PSN accounts, but DLC is locked to corresponding region.

Example, lets say I have Tales of Graces F in US retail disc and I downloaded DLC from US PSN and JP PSN accounts. While I can download both DLC just fine on my PS3 I can only use DLC from US PSN with my US retail disc.

To use DLC from JP PSN I have to import a JP version of Tales of Graces F.
