Hardware Can a switch without battery work docked?

Maybe people should check to see if there switch has a bending issue when they first buy the console because mine came brand new in the box bent.

This is a bit off topic, but there are user reports that their switch got scratched by the dock.

only because they jam it in. i'm not using a SP when i take it out to change carts (usually the only time i take it out of dock or i may use it to check eshop when CBF turning on the tv) and no scratches on mine. just have to be slow and gentle not jam it in like a snes cart!

If you're that concerned buy a surge protector to connect the Dock to.

And the bending switch is a mix of heat and user pulling on them while in handheld mode.

there are some phones that won't boot if the battery isen't 5% or more (and I haven't tested with my 3ds for that)
but the point is.. has anybody tried conecting a batteryless switch to the dock? and if so.. did it boot?

Don't assume your case for everyone... Some batteries can be defective...

I bought a Nvidia Shield Tablet 4 example and got a 2nd one for free from Nvidia because the first one had a defective battery (which was actually a general problem on tablets using that exact battery), same goes into some mobile phones that are still having a series of defective batteries...

Anything can happen.

Also heat reduces battery life a lot, so if the battery is getting a lot of heat from the Switch cooler while docked, it will surely have its life also reduced by getting heat continually, same when using as portable and with too much power being draw from battery which heats up battery.

ps: Anyway on the defective Nvidia Shield tablet, I have seen people that simply changed the battery and got 2 fully working Nvidia shield tablets (I still have my old one working and like new), AND I ALSO SAW SOME PEOPLE REMOVING THE BATTERY SOLDERING DIRECT POWER AND ATTACHED IT TO THE BACK OF THE TV AND USE IT AS A MEDIA CENTER like the Nvidia Shield TV.

To answer the question - no, the Switch won't work without a battery when docked. I partly dismantled my Switch just to test this and disconnected the battery connector - when docked the green LED blinks once then goes out - SOMETHING appears very briefly on the Switch's display when the power button is pressed but I can't read it as the dock gets in the way.

Similarly it also won't work in the dock when the battery is really low and the charge bar is in the red, the green LED on the dock won't stay lit and it won't send any data to the connected TV or monitor. However in the case of a really low battery you'll see the battery indicator and the black zig-zag on the Switch display to indicate that it's charging. Once it gets to a certain level of charge the Switch then works in the dock.

I can think of two possible reasons for this:

a) The Switch needs a certain level of charge in order to talk to the dock (but in some ways that doesn't make sense as the dock will provide power to the Switch)

b) Nintendo just don't want people running the Switch without a battery. That's just a guess though and doesn't really make any kind of logical sense.

I think the bending is more of the user's fault and they decided to blame Ninty.

No, I'm almost positive the bending has nothing to do with the battery. If it was the battery, the shell would bulge on one or both sides, and that's not the case.
For the record i think mine came slightly bent out of the box. I didn't notice until a few months later, but it doesn't seem to have gotten any worse do I can only assume that it came like that.

Batteries do indeed tend to baloon, but mostly is the lipos, Li-ions will probably take many years and your battery won't hold charge anyway when that usually happens...

I think the bending is just from the heat on the SOC area, on the voltage controller chips and other stuff and maybe by using it a lot on the dock which is badly designed and it gets stuck between two walls with little space in between (dock walls) making the heat keeping a bit concentrated in there...
