Quote from the Wii U optical disk wiki:

"The format was developed and supplied by Panasonic, which is one of the major patent holders in Blu-ray technology. It is not clear whether the Wii U Optical Disc is similar in physical design to the Blu-ray physical disc specification."

It's a proprietary Disc model by Panasonic ONLY for Nintendo and is quite a BIG part of the bluray standart maker, they surrely used a big part of the standard but made it unique to avoid the fees from the BDA.

And Bluray can be 50gb because it's "just" dual layer, Blurays are 25gb by standard.

Nintendo uses proprietary disc formats for the Wii and Wii U both. Not DVDs and Blu-ray Discs, but similar formats. Very few PC drives can read Wii discs, and most that can are nearly impossible to find, and use the now outdated IDE standard.

Can anybody give me a link to a working CD driver that detects Wii games?

Only certain DVD drives can use Wii discs, but even then it's only for dumping.

It IS Blu-Ray!!!!!!! (It's just that Nintendo didn't want to pay royalties, so they modded the stock Blu-Ray Spec.)

...which by your own admission, makes it NOT Blu-ray. By this logic, a DVD is the same thing as a CD, just modified a little bit to hold more data, and a Hackintosh is the same thing as a real Mac -- it's the same OS with the hardware modified a little bit (PC parts). Right?

@rs1n is true. I would say instead that Wii U discs are based off of Blu-Ray but are not truly Blu-Ray.

Not to be that kinda person to revive an old thread but...what driver/dvd drives would work for reading wii and/or wii U discs? No matter if wii u ones are blueray, not blue ray, or somewhere in the middle? There was something about one LG made but the convo about that ended so idk

    wtf? bluray ?
high capacity dvd's and dual layer dvd's if you call them anything.
i got a few wii drives for my pc's, use friidump or rawdump to dump and sort the discs info

lemme guess there is some super secret wii bluray tech in my cheap old $20 lg ...pfff
    [IMG]

either way you cant dump wiiU with a drive , so your better off to use the homebrew and the consoles they belong to to dump your games nowadays

..for the Wii U - It maybe "might" be a BluRay Format, but I am pretty sure,a normal PC Drive can not read Wii U Discs.

iirc the Wii U discs use a modified version of bluray, so maybe you need a bluray drive along with the right software to rip them via a PC?

It's essentially the same kind of disc but technically a different format. I don't know of any PC drives that can read them.

Hmmm... I know this sounds dumb, but what's stopping us from just taking the drive out of a (already broken/bricked) Wii U, (aside from the cables not being SATA or IDE, and drivers) and plugging it into a PC?

The Question is,who invests Time and Energy in this.....many "new" Homebrewers" and/or Developers have unfortunately
the "Wii U is a dead and unpopular Console" Attitude...
    Sad,but understandable...
