Bye-bye to Wiifree

The developers have informed us that development on WiiFree has ceased. They feel that YAOSM is the spiritual successor to WiiFree and should be used instead. They commend Bell on his fantastic work with YAOSM and hope that everyone will support him and the YAOSM project.

Thanks to the WiiFree for all their hard work. Everyone here at WiiNewz wishes them the best of luck on their new endevours.

This always happens. Too many people reinventing the wheel by creating their own chips or devices. Look at the DS scene. It's a mess with so many ways to play ROMs, and all of them have slightly different compatibility.

This was inevitable. OpenWii is a long ways ahead of WiiFree with YAOSM very close behind. I believe the WiiFree main developer had said if OpenWii pulled out too far ahead of WiiFree he was oing to drop support anyways.

YAOSM is not commercial it is Open source, like WiiFree.

What I wrote is pretty self explanatory, but if I need to break it down further for you:

Is this a case of commercial chips such as Wiikey and Cyclowiz having better support than that of the chips from the open source community? Should opensource users jump ship or can they stick with a solution that will still have support?

Open-source is still alive and kicking. YAOSM and Open-Wii are still fantastic chips. The only reason WiiFree dropped out is because YAOSM and OpenWii got too far ahead of them and they felt it would be better to drop support and let people use the superior chips instead of playing a futile game of catch up.

OpenWii claims their chip can upgrade via DVD.

IMO it would be better to Update using a programmer.

OpenWii CAN upgrade via DVD. They released a mini-firmware just to show it can do it. And, the new SMG update can be updated through DVD. OpenWii is really great because it has DVD updates AND it has the hex files so you can update with a programmer.

BTWpenWii is the ONLY open-source Wii drive-chip out there with DVD updates.
