Hardware Buying New 3DS do i need to transfer?

Hi, I've currently got an old 3DS and i am thinking of selling/trading it in for either a New3ds or the XL version. Just wondering since they did the new account system etc for Nintendo stuff now do i still need to keep my old 3DS to transfer my Nintendo Network ID thingy to the new 3DS so i can re-download the games i bought on my old one on the new on? Not sure how it all works :s Thanks in advance!

You can call Nintendo and they will transfer it.

Do i need to keep the Old 3DS to do it? Or do i just need to write down the serial numbers etc?

Serial numbers, just dont let the old 3ds get formatted before its done.
