Yeah, Gamestop seems to be eating up any competition. I remember Rhino Video Games, which came out hmm 2 years ago, and within 7 months, Gamestop bought them out. Play-N-Trade just opened down my street, I should go check them out too.

I didnt know Gamestop, shrink wrapped there games, I dont know if I believe that, I am aware though that employees can take home new games, but I suppose they do shrink them since employees can take the new games.

wow this sounds like what pretty much all the game stores in my area do except GAME (i think they're sealed since they put them in those huge plastic cases that can only be removed be an employee) and jb hifi, ebgames does the same thing as gamestop except for the whole stealing codes thing and they give you the same crappy prices for games to trade in

I only bought one console game from GameStop. It was Metal Gear Ac!d right around the launch of the PSP. The girl behind the counter kept pressuring me to buy it used for 5 USD less. I kept telling her that I'd rather pay the 5 extra dollars to get the thing brand new but she kept starring at me as though i was about to go swimming with an extension cord tied to my waist. I ended up buying the new one and it did look factory sealed.

A big part of that, is that it looks bad on a gamestop employees record to be selling only new games, since gamestop is not making much money off of the new games. If all that employee has been selling was new games, then I can see why that employee was putting on the pressure.

The only true games you buy are sealed ones. Not those f***ing joker ones where they keep the discs in draws at the back and can't even find them. If they do that they should keep them in PROPER SLEEVES. To protect the disc.

Recently I went to GAME and Got Dragon Quest SWORDS. I actually BOUGHT IT, the guy got the disc from the back, and dropped it on the floor. (This is in Erith in England, near London) He proceeded to tell me that he had just dropped it on the floor.

I told him okay.

I took the game home, opened the case without ripping the GAME seal (you rip it, you can't return it, but he was so careless he didn't put it on straight)

I decided I didn't want it after reading reviews about it being meh-ish and Dragon Quest never WAS my style. So I took it back and got a refund...

P.S : Yes I got the disc back in the case without unsealing it, and snapped it into place, and took the manual out and read it, and put it back in.

No offense, but is english your second language? Re-read what I said because I said what you did except the PlanetX part. Software Etc was the start of it, they picked up EB, Babbages, Funcoland, Planet X, and the rest and instead of keeping all the names along that trail of destruction became Gamestop.

I'm quite aware of their roots as they ruined a favorite store of mine: Funcoland, as I was a HUGE NES player in those days and they ruined a valuable local resource.

I was also a big fan of FuncoLand. Luckily another used gaming store (similar to what FuncoLand was) opened a few towns over a couple years ago, so I get all my games there (even though there's a GameStop right down the street from my house). I just got a Sega GameGear there the other day.

And did you know that the company that actually owns all of those is Barnes & Noble??? I thought that was interesting.

You know I feel like such a sell out. First I was going to rip on the TC because importantly I was trying to work at GameStop since the summer time. I was 'this' close to working last year but you got so many people who doesn't know crap about games they are working there but don't know shit about games. So I was in the back of the line and have to wait until I can get call up for next employment.

Now seeing the truth for what GameStop is I don't like, how I can work for a company that deceives the buyer. I'm mostly an honest person and a terrible liar so it won't work with me inside that store. Also TC you is new to this place, no offense but I will insult you too if it wasn't for other people backing up your information. I'm actually sad right now because as a honest person. I won't try to sell a game knowing that it's used! Why couldn't the employees get the benefit of buying the games that just shipped in before the ship date? Instead of playing 'used' games and placing them back inside the store is just plain 'cheap' and I don't like being cheap! I'm not cheap and I will never be cheap!

Also I remember my younger brother tried to sell games so he can get Tenchu Z, one of the employees at GameStop told him that he needs a driver's license or something like a state license in order to sell his games. I was like 'bullshit' since when you need an authentic proof of your citizenship in order to sell some games. I was tight that he got gripe for getting like 20-30 bucks in total of selling a used game and one of them was 'CoD:WoW' I can't believe he didn't get like 35-40 bucks since it was still next and only came out like Last Year. What a fucking rip off!!!

They also own the Hollywood Video/Game Crazy chain, which is why they ditched all "retro" stuff. But they chose to leave the old store brand on it so people wouldn't actually know about the buyout. I knew an employee at the time of the buyout who notified me of an internal company memo about it.

Ugh that makes me sick. I had no idea about Game Crazy. Brother in IL lives in a town with one and a couple years ago I was in the place and they had a boxed 2600(2), intellivision, games for both (plenty) among others like the 5200 and 7600. Beyond that had the usual bigger name stuff of the NES/SMS era forward and now knowing the status of the store I'm depressed a bit as it was the last chain that did the right thing.

First off, that's THEFT, then FALSE ADVERTISING... both are big time crimes... so doubt that.

Funny, my friend works at UPS, and knows exactly when shipments go to the store, since he delivers them. UPS guys look in your boxes... they know what your gonna get before you do. You don't get shipments of games weeks before they are released... nice try.

Something similar happens with GAME (a British store chain) here in Spain. To avoid theft, they have the empty boxes on display and you have to ask for the game if you want to buy it. I can't say I trust the employees, to be honest, mainly because my local GAME store usually sells "preowned" copies as expensive as new copies. There's something fishy there, I can smell it.

I only buy my games if they come completely sealed by Nintendo, usually in Media Markt/Saturn (a German store chain) or Carrefour (French supermarket), even if I don't get exchangeable points for my purchase ¬¬

I know they have empty boxes on the walls... yes... only one copy of each game on the walls... but there is a HUGE case filled with all the games... when you want a NEW game, meaning never been played, they pull one out that's NEVER BEEN PLAYED... shrink wrap in tact... and no, the employees don't shrink wrap the games... This. I was a UPS driver and you do not get games weeks before release.

And I should add, most of GS boxes are not taped on the bottom, just glued, and when the box is packed with games it'll break open very easily.

There's a friend of mine that bragged to me about doing this at the Gamestop he works at, and I wanted to punch him for it.

And the major releases tend to be sent to stores ahead of time, but most titles don't show up until the day or day before they're put up.

I had always wondered why they needed ID but I asked and was given an answer that satisfied me. Apparently you need to be 18+ to enter into a contract with another party which is what you're doing. This requires ID to verify your age. Also, from some five second searching, apparently you do have to prove citizenship/residency to deter the sale of stolen goods as pawn shops have to turn in a list of who sold what to the police every now and again. At a video game store it kind of seems unecessary but I guess GameStop works under the same umbrella, legally, as pawn shops. If you don't like the policy don't hate on GameStop, hate the government (and work to change it, if it really irks you)

Edit: Also, yeah I was recently sold a display copy of Persona 4. Disks were fine so I didn't complain but when I got home I noticed the manual was slightly ripped. This pissed me off so I went back; luckily for me they had another copy so they just switched out the manual. I was tempted to argue for a discount/refund/something because this wouldn't have happened with a truly new copy but I didn't bother. I guess I should have

to clarify here for UK users mainly not many people know or aware that the chainstore .. GAME bought GAMESTATION stores out in 2007 so if you shop at either the profits goto GAME still in the end!

and Game/Gamestation DO SHRINK WRAP stuff quite regular ...they have CONSOLE bundles with games and gaming pads in the windows of Gamestation stores that are SHRINK WRAPPED by the staff I've even watched them do it!

the argument could go on and on about them not using games themselves and re shrink wrapping them ... the stores I've been in CERTAINLY DO! ....

I know a few of the staff in a couple of stores ....and know that they also dump new DS roms for themselves/other staff and copy the disk based games for themselves its been going on for as long as I can remember!

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if they had stole the Nintendo points cards for themselves they are greedy only out there to make a profit they will give you next to nothing for the games on trade in and even less for cash!

Even the staff there that I know ...admitted they are told to make the best profits they can even if it means by ripping you off with selling you a pre owned title as a new one after its been re shrink wrapped!

Hence the reason why newer NINTENDO titles and others like XBOX 360 now have the NINTENDO/MICROSOFT watermark on the tear strip/opening seal that runs round the box to open them so you can see if its been opened or not before you get it!
