I tried it with verbatim DVD-R DL and it didn't work.
Later used an DVD+R DL and that one worked ok.
When using the -R, IMG-burn doesn't allow me to set the layer break, maybe that's the problem?

Memorex 8x DVD+R DL @ 2.4x with layer break @ 2084960, book type set to DVD-ROM

And -R discs don't seem to be as readable as +R discs for some reason.

I am quite new to GBAtempt scene.
However IMO, they should add this info to the burning guide that is within one of the stickies (i think its "a list of guides that will help newbies" or something like that).
SSBB might be the first DL but there should be more on the way. i been looking for a thread on DL burning. Just don't wanna end up with a bunch of freesbies.

-R are better for the laser though right?

Should I just cancel my order of the -R DL and get +R DL?

In general +Rs do require more usage from the laser to read than -Rs do. This would be assuming that the burns on both media types are flawless. But +Rs have better protection against burn errors than -Rs do. So the result is that the -Rs can potentially be harder on the laser as it strains to read past the errors (not to mention that the game might not be playable at all or will stutter).

Another problem is that not all media is treated equally with all drives. Some will burn better with cheap media than with the expensive brands. And some will burn -Rs better than +Rs and vice versa. Some discs will have a variation in the dye used which makes them more error prone or even unusable -- even a few discs out of a spindle that work great. Not to mention that the different drives that will be reading the media won't all read it the same. This makes it difficult to determine what media to use until you try it for yourself. Even with the same burner, media, firmware, reading drive the results can and do vary.

I always look up the media and try to find people who burnt them with the same drive to try to make a more educated guess as to what media to go with. Then if it works well I always try to stick with that media. I would go for the +Rs as long as they aren't Verbatims made in India (the Singapore ones are fine others have said). But you will have to take a look at the media compatibility list and google around to see the full picture of what media has a higher chance of working well for your setup.

Many people swear by the Singapore made Verbatims and different reviews from people who bought said that's where these discs were made. I would probably get them.

People are saying that these ones are made in Singapore. Bad thing is is that you can't tell if they change batches as they go...

I'm not sure about burning DL discs, but if needs be you can trim your smashbros iso down to a single layer, you just lose the cutscene videos in SSE.

Bad idea.. The cut scene videos is better to be include. I dont like to trim the game iso down to a single layer at all, no thanks!

It's the same prob here - as wiipower told DL are not supported anymore in rev07. so you are not able to play a dvd9 of ssbb with a softmodded wii - even if had set the correct layer break. you will need to install an old rev of cIOS, i think - correct me if i'm wrong.
it's the same WHICH dvd-dl you use by the way memorex, verbatim etc. but it should be "+". the ssbb dvd9 mehtod can only be played by users with a modchip (or users with an OLD rev...^^).
