This is why I tell everyone who is hacking his/ her Wii, install BootMii and Preloader and make a NAND Backup FFS.

Savemiifree is your last resort before sending it to ninty.

Wouldn't it make sense to run DOP immediately after downgrading to 3.2, and install the older version of IOS50, that way if ever by mistake do a disc update to 3.4 it wont be an issue, maybe all of the tutorials out there should have that step added if they contain downgrading to 3.2.

No it would make sense to STOP FUCKING DOWNGRADING WII'S FROM 4.0.

Absolutely worthless process to go through that's especially dangerous for modchip users (not to mention will brick boot2v4 Wii's). You gain absolutely nothing and in fact lose the SD card menu, and put yourself in a more dangerous position vulnerable to brick more easily.

I'm still at 3.2U (It was never downgraded, only upgraded to 3.2U)

Everything works at 3.2U, there is no reason for me to be at 4.1 (All updates are blocked via Starfall, Preloader, and Modchip)

I dont care about the new SD Card Menu or the increased SD read/write speeds.

Not wanting to UPDATE from 3.2 is understandable if you don't want anything else it gives you and know what you're doing enough to not "accidentally" do something to fuck it up, but going through the trouble of downgrading to it when you're ALREADY at 4.0/4.1 is utterly pointless and puts your Wii at a completely unnecessary risk of bricking.

I'm still at 3.3u, it's like the bastard child of firmwares. No guides written for it. tempted to update, but don't want the hassle and if it's not broke...

But cases like these make me wonder if I should pull the plug

you know, i've never understood why nintendo can fix a full brick when we cant... what is it they do exactly that we cant? :hmm:

the most likely have a way to get the wii in service mode (maybe with a usb key and some other stuff)
and a service mode disk

like the psp has Pandora and the Magic Memory stick

Don't they just give you a different Wii after flashing your save files and such to the new one in some cases?

yeah, i do a bit of psp hacking too actually. This to me seems a solid way to fix a brick, except people found out about it and exploited it. with a wii the only way we can hack it is if it's NOT bricked lol who the hell managed to discover pandoras battery anyways... my guess is a sony worker leaked to to people lol

come to think of it, what happened to all this 'custom firmware for wii' stuff that went around. i remember when custom system menus were being made for the wii, like the matrix one. I also remember that AtH was talking about his own custom firmware/ update system or something, no idea what happened to that plan lol.

yeah actually i bet this is the case. apart from they wouldnt give youa new wii when you're paying £40 for a repair would they. it's more likely that they have a way to remove save files or something and move them to a new nand then put that in the wii.

Am i close?

anyways, i'd know easily if they'd changed my wii, its covered in scratches and dents and has a zelda faceplate on it lol

I actually happen to know one of the most unlucky people on the planet that had to send his Wii to Nintendo about 10 or 11 times. And not due to retarded bricking, because of genuine hardware problems. Most of the times he would get different Wii's back and one time they even forgot to put back all of his save data/tickets of 80-90 some odd VC games he had. He sent that one back and they gave him another one with his stuff back (which of course again immediately had some hardware problem with it.) So yea they DO replace Wii's entirely in some cases. But I suppose since they still get the system and it's parts and stuff back they don't quite lose THAT much in doing so.

I have US 4.1, BootMii as Boot2, Preloader installed. Preloader blocks check of updatres. But does GH5 have any updates that *need* to be applied before the game will work? Do any gems have udpates that have to be installed?

No game ever *needs* an update to be installed. The only time that was ever the case is when people were on 3.2 and you needed a couple new ios from 3.4 to play Madworld. Even then you didn't need to update you could manually install the needed ios files as wads.

If you are on 4.1 no game (for now) will ever need an update to play.

This is why you should always have Preloader or Starfall update blocking on if you use disc media. The game will just play without even checking or asking for updates. Of course if you were using a USB loader as most people do now, you'd be safe as well as they all block updates, as well as the fact WBFS Manager scrubs them out when you load a game onto the the hard drive.

I agree, removing all the guides that suggest downloading would be the best solution, I at least think that adding this step and a warning would be better than just leaving any guide that mentions downgrading period.

Thanks for the reply, I'm still a noob when it comes to this. What happens if the IOS required for a game isn't installed? How do I know which IOS it needs? Is there a good site which lists them by game?

Ok - I just read this whole thread and understand that I can WiiBrickBlock the update on GH5 disk - but for my own information, I wanted to try to understand something... While I have a basic understanding of IOS's, I don't know much in the way of specific details.

I used Wanikoko 4.0 updater and have subsequently updated to 4.1 U. I have a Wiikey (original) installed. Never downgraded my system menu back to 3.4 or 3.2 - HOWEVER - I did do some sort of downgrade to my IOS files in order to make my USB loader work properly. How do I know if this was IOS50 or if there is any risk to brick with this update?

Thanks in advance for your reply.
